McCafferty, Owen

biography

Owen McCafferty (born 1961 in Belfast) is a playwright from Northern Ireland. His debut play, Winners, Losers and Non-Runners, premiered in 1992 in the Point Fields Theatre in Belfast. It was followed by The Private Picture Show (1994), Closing Time (2002) and Unfaithful (2014) among others.

His play Scenes from the Big Picture, staged at the National Theatre in London in 2003, won him the John Whiting Award, the Evening Standard's Charles Wintour Award and the Meyer-Whitworth Award. As a result, he was the first playwright to have won all three awards in one year. Another of his plays, Quietly (2012), which tells the story of a long-standing fight between a Catholic and a Loyalist that is mediated by a Polish immigrant bartender, attracted a range of positive reviews and was shortlisted for the Irish Times Theatre Award and the Writers Guild of UK Award among others. His play Mojo Mickybo was adapted for the screen in 2004.

Owen McCafferty grew up in London but returned with his parents to Belfast in 1971. He studied Philosophy and History at the University of Ulster.
