biography

Nina Witoszek, pen name Nina FitzPatrick (born 1954 in Pszczyna) is a Polish fiction writer, dramatist and screenwriter. She also holds the post of a Research Professor at the Centre for Development and the Environment at Oslo University. Her debut collection of short stories Fables of the Irish Intelligentsia, co-written with her husband Pat Sheeran, was published in London in 1991 under the Penguin Books imprint. The book won the prestigious Irish Times-Aer Lingus Award, but the prize was withdrawn due to the fact that the author could not prove her Irish ancestry. The collection of short stories has been followed by two novels: The Loves of Faustyna (1995) and Daimons (2003). Nina Witoszek has also written a range of film scripts including Talking to the Dead (RTE, dir. David Power), The Fifth Province (dir. Frank Stapleton, Film Flagh Audience Award 2000), The Turbulent Zone (NRK, dir. Piotr Chołodziński), and Aqua (RTE, dir. Frank Stapleton).

She was awarded the Norwegian Freedom of Expression Foundation (Fritt Ord) Award for “bringing Eastern European perspectives to the public debate in Scandinavia” in 2005 and was chosen one of the ten most important intellectuals in the country by the Norwegian daily Dagbladet in 2006.

She lives and works in Oslo.
