biography

Dermot Bolger (born 1959 in Dublin) is an Irish novelist, playwright and poet. His debut novel, The Woman’s Daughter, was published in Dublin in 1987 by Raven Arts Press. It has been followed by seven novels, including Emily’s Shoes (1992), A Second Life (1994), Temptation (2000), The Family on Paradise Pier (2005), nine volumes of poetry, and several plays, including The Lament for Arthur Cleary (1989) and Walking the Road (2007). His play The Townlands of Brazil (2006), published as a part of The Ballymun Trilogy (2010), outlines a set of poignant observations on the similarities between Polish and Irish histories of migration. He has also edited many anthologies, such as The Picador Book of Contemporary Irish Fiction (1993), Ireland in Exile (1994) and Night & Day: Twenty Four Hours in the life of Dublin (2008).

Dermot Bolger received a range of prestigious awards, including Samuel Beckett Prize, Stewart Parker BBC Prize and Irish Times ESB Award for Best New Irish Play 2005. He has co-founded New Island, a major Irish publishing house. He also regularly works as a freelance journalist for various Irish newspapers, including The Sunday Business Post, The Sunday and The Irish Times. His novels and plays have been published and staged in Poland, France, Germany and a number of other countries.

He lives and works in Dublin.
