biography

Wioletta Grzegorzewska (born 1974 in Koziegłowy) is a poet, writer, editor and translator, publishing also under the penname of Wioletta Greg. Her debut poetry collection, Wyobraźnia kontrolowana (Controlled Imagination), was published in Częstochowa in 1998 under the WSP imprint. It has been followed by six poetry volumes, including Orinoko (Orinoco, 2008), Inne obroty (Different Rotations, 2010), Ruchy Browna (Brownian Motion, 2011), Pamięć Smieny/Smena’s Memory (2011), a diary Notatnik z wyspy (Notes from the Isle of Wight, 2012) and her debut novel, Guguły (2014). Her writings have met with critical acclaim and won her a range of awards including the prize of Tyska Zima Poetycka competition in 2008 and the Goldene Eule 2015 in Vienna. Her poetry book Finite Formulae & Theories of Chance was shortlisted for the 2015 Griffin Poetry Prize, while the novel Guguły was shortlisted for Polish literary awards Nike and Gdynia. Grzegorzewska’s writings have been translated into English and Welsh.

Grzegorzewska used to live and work in Częstochowa, where she organised cultural events, edited a student periodical, founded a literary journal and set up an independent publishing house Bulion. In 2006, she left Poland for the UK and settled in Ryde on the Isle of Wight.
