Smolarek, Iza

biography

Iza Smolarek (born 1977 in Poznań) is a Polish poet, writer and journalist. Her debut poetry volume, się lenienie (Lazing), came out in Olsztyn in 2006 under the Portret imprint. It has been followed by stany zmysłowe (Sensory States), published in 2007 by Liberum Arbitrium. Her works were critically acclaimed and won her a number of awards, including Jan Śpiewak and Anna Kamieńska Literary Prize 2005, Marek Garbala Literary Prize 2005, and Złote Pióro Sopotu Award 2006.

She co-wrote, with Tomasz Klarecki, an award-winning crime novel Kontrakt (Contract, 2005) and its sequel Wilk i… śmierć bankiera (Wolf and… the Death of a Banker, 2006). She has also contributed to a variety of newspapers and magazines including Odra, Topos, Akcent, Zeszyty Literackie and Gazeta Wyborcza. She is a member of PoEtry London and the Association of Polish Writers Abroad. She lives and works in London.
